2018/2019 IN REVIEW: UNN ESSAYISTS’ GROUP REMAINS UNRIVALED NATIONWIDE
UNN Students at the National Travel Essay Competition (NTEC) 2019 Finals.
“Phenomenal” is a word insufficient to describe the feats being
achieved by the University of Nigeria Essayists’ Group, a para-academic
student group devoted to advancing the cause of literary excellence and
bringing prestige to the University of Nigeria by dominating national
and international essay competitions. And as in previous years, this
year has been no different for the team.
The session kicked off with Kingsley Igbokwe (Law,
500 level) emerging overall winner of the Mathematics for Life
Foundation National Essay Competition and second runner-up at the
Nigerian Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) Essay Competition. Also, the
group clinched top prizes in the Nigerian Film Corporation Annual Essay
Competition with Adaobi Ike-Okonkwo (Medicine & Surgery, 500 level) and Sunday Ogbaga (alumnus)
emerging first and second runners-up respectively. The prestigious
Essay Competition organized by the Chartered Institute of Personnel
Management of Nigeria (CIPM) felt our presence once more with five out
of the seven finalists – Christopher Offor (Public Administration, 400 level), Ikechukwu Onwosi (Medicine & Surgery, 500 level), Chibuzor Ndubisi (Mechanical Engineering, 400 level), and Kingsley Igbokwe (Law, 500 level) among others – after which Chibuzor Ndubisi placed
first runner-up. Chibuzor had earlier emerged overall winner of the St.
JohnPaul Outreach Maiden Essay Competition and received an Honourable
Mention in the International Essay Contest for Divine Love.
Victories continued in early 2019 as Christopher Offor (Public
Administration, 400 level) emerged overall winner of the Academics
Stand Against Poverty (ASAP) West Africa Essay Competition. The students
extended the University’s record in the African Organization for
Standardization/Standards Organization of Nigeria (ARSO/SON) Essay
Competition to four consecutive years, after Savictor Evans-Ibe (Combined Social Sciences, 300 level), Chibuzor Ndubisi (Mechanical Engineering, 400 level), and Harrison Eze (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, 400 level) emerged 1st, 2nd, and 5th
places respectively. Shortly afterwards, they dominated the National
Travel Essay Competition (NTEC) with seven out of the ten finalists from
the University of Nigeria: Savictor Evans-Ibe (Combined Social Sciences, 300 level), Akunna James-Ibe (Medicine & Surgery, 400 level), Paschaline Onwuka (Medicine & Surgery, 400 level), Chijioke Asogwa (Medicine and Surgery, 500 level), and Chiamaka Nwosu (Dentistry, 400 level) among others. Following in the footsteps of Mesoma Igbokwe (Medicine and Surgery, 500 level) who had won the competition the previous year, Savictor Evans-Ibe emerged overall winner with Chiamaka Nwosu placing second runner-up.
Winners of the ARSO/SON National Essay Competition 2019.
The students also made a name for themselves and received enormous
attention in the In Our Mind Show Weekly Essay Contest touching on
critical issues in the Nigerian landscape. Christopher Offor (Public Administration, 400 level), Helen Nnenanya (Animal Science, 300 level), Savictor Evans-Ibe (Combined Social Sciences, 300 level), Chiamaka Nwosu (Dentistry, 400 level), Chibuzor Ndubisi (Mechanical Engineering, 400 level), Akunna James-Ibe (Medicine & Surgery, 400 level), Angela Eze (Agric. Extension, 300 level), Fredrick Isaac (Medical Rehabilitation, 200 level), Ikechukwu Onwosi (Medicine & Surgery, 500 level), and Nicodemus Onah (Electronic Engineering, 500 level) were among the winners and finalists in different weeks.
And it didn’t end there. Kingsley Igbokwe (Law, 500
level) emerged overall winner in the undergraduate category of the Tim
Adeleye Foundation Essay Competition and subsequently won the Best
Writer of the Year Award at the University of Nigeria Law Students
Association Annual Dinner 2019. The Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Nigeria (ICAN) Essay Competition attracted golden entries from Savictor Evans-Ibe (Combined Social Sciences, 300 level) and Divine Godwin (Accountancy, 200 level) who emerged overall winner and first runner-up respectively. Most recently, Frederick Isaac (Medical Rehabilitation, 200 level) emerged overall winner in the 3rd edition of the National Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) Essay Competition. Chioma Ezeigbo (Law,
200 level) was one of the shortlisted writers for the 2019 K and L
Prize for Short Fiction and was a finalist at the Nigerian Law
Intellectual Property Watch (NLIPW) National Essay Competition 2019.
On the international level, Chibuzor Ndubisi
(Mechanical Engineering, 400 level) placed third runner-up at the Global
Peter Drucker Challenge Essay Competition 2019 and received an
Honourable Mention for the Most Original Essay in the student category.
He will be travelling to Vienna, Austria for the Global Peter Drucker
Forum in November, all expenses paid. Also, Chinonso Ama (alumnus)
who graduated as one of UNN’s finest essayists after winning the ARSO
Essay Competition on both national and continental levels, will be
travelling to Germany in November as one of the only two Nigerians
selected as youth ambassadors to the Internet Governance Forum.
Many other successes have been recorded and celebrated by these fiery
students in recent times. The UNN Essayists’ Group has also been
recognized and commended by organizers of national essay contests for
maintaining a multidisciplinary nature superior to that of any other
school in Nigeria.
To these students, the university administration
congratulates you and urges you to keep the great flag of UNN flying. We
wish you even greater successes in future.
